Alyssa Wagner is a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) who specializes in sports injuries and orthopedic care with a specific passion for ACL prevention and non-operative management of ACL injuries. She works at Activcore in Denver, Colorado, located just a mile from the popular Cherry Creek Shopping District.
Alyssa’s background and education make her uniquely qualified to handle more complex sports injuries, chronic pain, and post-operative care. She holds a Bachelors degree in Exercise Science from Northern Arizona University, as well as a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from the University of New England. She also has advanced post-graduate training in general sports and movement assessment including application of the SFMA to determine functional mobility and potential areas of dysfunction that may be leading to the source of injuries. Alyssa is also Trigger Point Dry Needling Level II certified as a tool to improve mobility, decrease pain, and increase function. Furthermore, she is earning her credentials to become a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
Alyssa treats people of all ages and genders, with a special interest in helping soccer players, snowboarders and runners safely return to their sport. As a former competitive athlete herself, she greatly understands the value of a healthy body as well as the discipline involved in keeping it that way. She also knows what it takes to overcome challenges when faced with an injury.
Alyssa continues to practice what she preaches by leading an active lifestyle that includes running, hiking, camping and snowboarding. She also enjoys practicing yoga and meditation.
Alyssa goes beyond the injury and looks at the whole body when helping someone recover from an injury, pain and/or surgery. She utilizes a systematic approach of assessing functional movement patterns to identify areas of dysfunction that may be contributing to the underlying source of one’s pain. She then incorporates manual therapy techniques, dry needling, breathing mechanics, and graded exercise prescription to restore mobility, strength, balance, endurance and function.
Alyssa’s interest in injury prevention stems from years on the soccer field, seeing many of her teammates suffer from career ending injuries. Prevention for ACL injuries is currently under-served in today’s adolescents with alarming for rates of injury, especially among female athletes. With an extensive background in strength, conditioning and biomechanics, Alyssa hopes to one day correct this discrepancy. In fact, she has implemented an ACL prevention program into a U-13 female soccer program in Denver, and she would like to continue such work with surrounding teams and high school athletes.
Alyssa decided to combine her love for an active lifestyle with a passion for helping others to pursue a career in physical therapy. She grew up as a high level soccer player, snowboarder and runner which has shaped her appreciation for the human body and the dedication it takes to perform at an optimal level. She enjoys the field of physical therapy, and specifically working at Activcore, because of the ability to get to know each client on an individual basis in order to unlock their greatest potential as an athlete.
